KUNA, 9 August 2017

The US has pledged to provide further assistance for the reconstruction of the city of Fallujah and other areas of Al-Anbar province, roughly 70 kilometers west of Baghdad.

In a press conference with Al-Anbar governor Suhaib Al-Rawi, the US Ambassador to Iraq Douglas Silliman said that Washington is committed to helping in the reconstruction of Fallujah after the devastation afflicted on the city at the hands of the so-called Islamic State (IS).

The US has contributed, through the UN Development Program (UNDP), to removing about 25,000 kilograms of explosives from the city, in addition to supporting two thirds of the projects to restore stability to the city, the envoy added.

Moreover, Washington has helped bring life back to basic projects in Fallujah, water pumps and processing, besides restoring 20 schools and seven health centers.

The US aid to the city over the past few months hit $15 million, he said, lauding partnership with the Iraqi government for the rehabilitation of the international road between with Jordan.

Silliman's visit to Fallujah is the first by a senior US official since the city was liberated from the IS last year by the Iraqi forces, supported by the international coalition.
