Iraq has restarted operations at the Abi Al-Khasib Nitrogen Fertilizer Plant in Basra to strengthen domestic supply and support the agricultural sector, Industry Minister Khaled Battal Al-Najm announced.
The $1.3 billion facility will utilize advanced production technologies to meet market demand and reduce reliance on imports, Al-Najm stated at the inauguration ceremony. He emphasized that the project reinforces Basra’s position as Iraq’s industrial hub and aligns with the ministry’s strategy to expand private sector participation.
Highlighting Basra’s economic significance—contributing over 90% of Iraq’s federal budget—Al-Najm noted that industrial investments would drive job creation and local development.
The reopening follows two investment agreements between the ministry and China’s Shang Shin, including a $2 billion industrial city project in Basra.
