Taibah University in Saudi Arabia has started implementing the first phase of the university hospital project in Madinah. Phase 1 includes the construction of a SAR 500 million ($133.2 million) hospital with a bed capacity of up to 400, according to an official source.
Speaking to Zawya, the source added that the university hospital project will cover a total land area of 221,500 square meters and will be located in the Medical City, King Abdul Aziz Road, east of Madinah.
The project will also feature physicians' departments, clinics, nursing units, educational services, diagnostic laboratories and operating rooms. An additional 400 beds will be included in the second phase of the project.
During the current financial year (2013/2014), the Saudi government has allocated USD 3.57 billion (SAR 13.4 billion) for higher education projects. The budget includes the opening of 15 new faculties and new houses for the teaching staff. The establishment of three new university hospitals was approved with total costs reaching SAR 4.25 billion.
Around 13 new projects are currently being implemented in Taibah University , including the first and second construction phases of the Faculty of Science (for male students), the construction of a Faculty of Education (for male students), senior management building, assistant deans building, laboratories, classrooms, English language center (for male students), Faculty of Social Sciences (for male students), main electrical transformer stations, Faculty of Education (for female students) as well as laboratories and classrooms (for female students), with allocations for these projects exceeding SAR 1 billion.
