More than 50% of the nearly QR1.2bn, slated to be spent for the seven new contracts awarded by Ashghal to augment Qatar's healthcare infrastructure, is earmarked for additional operation theatres at Hamad General Hospital (HGH).
The QR628mn project, expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2015, comprises the construction of 20 new operation theatres, and associated support facilities on the ground and first levels.
There is a provision for in-patient rooms on the second floor and the work also involves renovating the vacant space within the hospital. The entire work is spread over 11,500sq m, an Ashghal official said.
Most of the expansion work would be executed in the area between the Women's Hospital and Emergency Department at the HGH. Traffic and access to the two facilities will be maintained throughout the duration of the work.
The HGH renovation and remodeling work will be executed in two phases. The first includes the construction of the new surgical block and service building, whereas the second phase involves the procurement and integration of a significant package of medical equipment and reconfiguration of internal roads and parking areas.
The work contracts awarded yesterday includes a new healthcare center in Ruwda. The new center, spread over 9,850sq m in the Al Thumama region, is expected to be completed by the last quarter of 2014 at a cost of QR108mn.
Besides the main clinic, the complex also features a mosque, ancillary building, a guard house, rooms for watchmen, ambulance garage and garbage rooms among other facilities.
The main clinic on the ground and first floors will have separate men's and women's clinics, specialty and dental clinics, dental, walk in clinic, radiology, pharmacy, lab, storage, administrative office and staff lockers. Parking will be in the basement.
Works amounting to QR99.99mn were awarded for new health centers in Al Ghuwairiyah and Al Karaana, both of which are scheduled for completion by the third quarter of 2014.
The Ghuwairiyah center, spread over a built-up area of 2,404sq m, is to be located in Umm Lberak region on the northern side. The new center in Al Karaana is located about 60km off Doha, on the country's southwestern side, along Salwa road. It is located on a built-up space of 2,329sq m.
One of the major highlights of the latest contracts was the construction of a health and wellness center in Umm Salal, at a cost of QR99.89mn. The project, expected to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2015, includes a physiotherapy center, conference facilities, mosque, atrium, spacious corridors, and a dedicated cafeteria.
The center will also feature a swimming pool, an electricity substation area, an ambulance building, fire pump rooms, and irrigation rooms.
