This year, Egypt’s Ministry of Agriculture increased the area planted with cotton by 23%, expanding from 255,000 acres to 311,700 acres across the country, according to Egypt Today.
Of the total area, 70,584 acres have been allocated for producing seeds for next year’s planting, the Ministry announced in a statement on Saturday.
The cotton crop is expected to yield between 1 million and 1.2 million quintals this season.
On August 11, the Egyptian Cabinet reported that the country’s 2023 cotton production reached 2.1 million metric quintals, with extra-long and long-staple cotton varieties accounting for 81% of the total, while the remaining portion consisted of medium and short-staple varieties.
In July, Mostafa Emara, Communication Coordinator at the Cotton Research Institute, revealed that a new high-yielding long-staple variety called Giza 99, also known as Extra Giza, will be introduced in 2025. This variety, a hybrid of Giza 93 and Giza 71, produces 8–9 quintals per feddan. The last high-quality variety, Giza 98, was introduced in 2022 and yields 10 quintals per feddan. It is being cultivated in Sohag and the New Valley this season.
