The Ministry of Agricultural, Fisheries, and Water Resources (MAFWR) is advancing its efforts to modernize and strengthen marketing systems in the agriculture and fisheries sectors across Oman. A major focus is on developing infrastructure and integrated management systems to boost efficiency in agricultural and fish markets, backed by new regulations to ensure product safety and quality.
Progress in fisheries has been particularly notable, with 119 fisheries factories and 62 operational fish markets now in place, alongside 1,009 fish retail shops nationwide. Additionally, permits and licenses for fish trading have seen significant growth, reflecting increased commercial activity and investments in the sector.
The Ministry is expanding Oman’s fish processing capacity, with 94 factories dedicated to processing and freezing, plus new facilities for canning, fish oil refinement, and ready-to-eat products like fish burgers and pickled fish. Sixteen new fish markets are also under construction across Oman, further enhancing distribution networks and supporting local economic growth.
Food industries in Oman play a pivotal role in food security and export diversification. To help balance supply and demand in local and international markets, the Ministry has facilitated entry to new markets, including China, and supports Omani companies’ participation in global exhibitions.
In line with its quality assurance goals, the Ministry conducted inspections, issuing violations for non-compliance and removing nearly two tons of substandard fish to protect consumer health.
Highlighting these efforts, the upcoming Oman Agro-Food Exhibition from December 2-4 at the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre, under the patronage of the Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries Wealth, will feature cutting-edge agricultural and marine technologies, greenhouse solutions, and modern irrigation innovations—an event poised to underscore Oman’s commitment to leading in agricultural advancements and expanding global market reach.
