Oman recently made significant strides in its transportation strategy, enhancing road networks and advancing rail and metro projects to drive economic diversification and regional connectivity. Central to these efforts is the Transportation and Logistics Strategy (2021–2025), spearheaded by the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology (MTCIT). This strategy aims to establish a dynamic, integrated, and sustainable transportation system tailored to the sultanate’s present and future needs.
Key Infrastructure Developments in 2023
The third annual report from the Oman Vision 2040 Implementation Follow-up Unit highlighted substantial progress across multiple projects:
- Road Enhancements:
- The Khasab-Lima-Dibba road in Musandam commenced construction, aiming to link remote areas and promote local economic activities, especially in tourism and trade.
- Expansion of the Dakhliyah-Muscat Road, with new lanes added between Rusayl and Bidbid, improved traffic flow.
- Completion of key segments of the Adam-Haima-Thumrait dual carriageway, connecting the north and south regions.
- Finalized tenders for the Batinah Coastal Road and the Sharqiyah Expressway, streamlining northern and eastern transport.
- Logistics Integration:
- Enhanced connectivity between the Sohar Free Zone and Batinah Expressway, alongside new integration within Khazaen Economic City, strengthened Oman’s logistics sector.
- Tourism-Focused Infrastructure:
- Feasibility studies were completed for roads expanding access to destinations like Jabal Akhdar and Jabal Shams, boosting tourism by connecting remote villages and scenic spots.
Advancements in Rail and Metro Projects
Railway initiatives included the start of preparatory work on the Oman-UAE railway link, which will connect Sohar and Abu Dhabi. With speeds of up to 200 km/h for passengers and a travel time of just 100 minutes between the cities, the project is expected to enhance trade and mobility between the nations.
In Muscat, the metro project progressed, with feasibility studies and system designs underway. Recommendations were made as part of the Greater Muscat Master Plan, including steps to appoint consultants and advance technical planning.
Regulatory and Technological Upgrades
MTCIT also introduced measures to digitize and streamline the transport sector:
- Over 163,000 new operating licenses were issued in 2023.
- Smart applications enabled company-specific taxi services.
- The Road Projects Prioritisation Matrix helped align projects with economic and environmental goals, ensuring efficient resource allocation.
These initiatives, rooted in Oman’s Transportation and Logistics Strategy, reflect a strong commitment to sustainable development and regional integration. As Oman continues to expand its infrastructure, its transportation sector will be pivotal in supporting economic growth and connectivity nationwide.
