Oman’s tourism industry is undergoing a major transformation as part of the country’s efforts to diversify its economy under Oman Vision 2040. With substantial investments announced in 2024, the sector is seeing robust growth in both domestic and international tourism, positioning Oman as a key destination in the Middle East, according to Muscat Daily.
The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, in collaboration with the Oman Investment Authority and Omran Group, has outlined ambitious plans to enhance tourism infrastructure. Omran Group, the government’s tourism development arm, has committed US$3 billion over five years to strategic projects that align with Oman Vision 2040’s goals for economic diversification and sustainable tourism.
“We aim to create sustainable tourism destinations that elevate Oman’s global reputation,” stated Hashil al Mahrouqi, CEO of Omran Group. By 2034, the tourism sector is expected to contribute over RO5.4 billion to the economy, equating to 9.8% of GDP, and generate over 265,000 jobs, with one in 13 residents working in tourism.
Omran has also secured nearly US$2 billion in foreign investments for luxury resorts, eco-friendly projects, and infrastructure upgrades, further bolstering Oman’s status as a premier global destination.
US$31 Billion Investment by 2040
The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism unveiled a US$31 billion investment plan at the ITB Berlin Convention in March 2024. This initiative seeks to enhance Oman’s offerings for leisure and business travelers alike.
Highlighting the importance of such platforms, H.E. Azzan al Busaidi, Undersecretary for Tourism, noted that events like ITB Berlin provide an opportunity to showcase Oman’s unique attractions and attract crucial foreign investments.
Rising Visitor Numbers and Economic Impact
Tourism is on the rise, with 4 million visitors recorded in 2023, marking a significant increase from the previous year. German tourists, in particular, surged by 182%, reflecting Oman’s growing popularity in European markets.
According to the World Travel and Tourism Council’s 2024 Economic Impact Research, Oman’s tourism contributed RO2.8 billion to GDP in 2023—a 35% rise from 2022. This momentum is expected to continue, with a projected contribution of RO3.3 billion in 2024, representing 7.6% of GDP.
Focus on Sustainability
Oman is prioritizing sustainability, with projects like the Nasim Resort in Jabal Akhdar designed to attract high-end tourists while minimizing environmental impact. Omran Group is also promoting initiatives like ‘Visit Oman,’ which connects local tourism with international markets, enhancing Oman’s global appeal.
To meet the growing demand, Oman is investing US$5.9 billion in 360 tourism projects, including hotels, resorts, and improved transportation networks. The government has also streamlined visa processes, easing entry for travelers from over 100 countries to enhance their experience.
Promising Future
The first half of 2024 showed encouraging signs, with 2 million visitors arriving by June—up 5.2% compared to 2023. Hotel revenues rose by 8.6% to RO119.5 million, and demand for luxury accommodations increased by 10.7%.
With these developments, Oman is solidifying its position as a world-class destination, combining sustainability, cultural richness, and modern infrastructure.
