Samsung C&T’s construction division has been awarded the “Facility E Qatar Desalination and Combined Power Generation Project,” commissioned by Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA) and operated by a consortium led by Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation. Announced on November 26, the contract is valued at $2.84 billion (approximately 3.97 trillion won), with Samsung C&T responsible for executing the project independently.
The project includes the construction of a combined cycle power plant with a capacity of 2,400 megawatts (MW) and a desalination facility capable of producing 500,000 tons of water daily. Located in Ras Abu Fontas, about 18 kilometers southeast of Doha, the project is scheduled for completion by 2029. Once operational, it will provide 16% of Qatar’s electricity and 17% of its desalinated water, playing a critical role in bolstering the nation’s energy and water infrastructure.
Samsung C&T’s extensive experience in delivering large-scale infrastructure projects, particularly in power generation and desalination, was instrumental in securing the contract. The company’s track record of reliability and efficiency in similar projects worldwide has solidified its reputation as a trusted partner in the industry.
Lee Byung-soo, Executive Vice President and Head of Samsung C&T’s Energy Solution Business Unit, affirmed the company’s dedication to the project, stating, “We are committed to successfully completing this project and ensuring a stable and reliable supply of electricity and desalinated water for Qatar.”
