Oman is progressing with plans for a metro system, now in its final decision-making phase, according to Minister of Housing and Urban Planning Dr. Khalfan Al Shueili.
Speaking during a press briefing in Muscat, Dr. Al Shueili shared that the metro project, part of the nation’s spatial strategy, is projected to be operational between 2030 and 2032, depending on government approvals and market dynamics. He noted that completion could take up to a decade, influenced by vendor selection and securing investment partners.
“Our target is to deliver this by 2030 to 2032,” he said, emphasizing the metro’s importance in enhancing Oman’s transportation infrastructure.
Dr. Al Shueili also discussed transformative urban development initiatives aimed at attracting foreign investment. These include the Integrated Tourism Complex (ITC) and two flagship programs: the Future Cities initiative and the Integrated Housing Complexes program.
The Future Cities initiative encompasses major projects such as Sultan Haitham City, A’ Thuraya City, Salalah Future City, and a new investment city in Al Jabal Al Akhdar (The Green Mountain). These developments are designed to attract expatriates and foreign investors through freehold property ownership opportunities.
“We’re already seeing strong interest from expats both within Oman and abroad,” Dr. Al Shueili said, highlighting international companies’ efforts to position Oman as a prime investment destination.
Meanwhile, the Integrated Housing Complexes program, featuring 12 properties under development, also offers freehold ownership opportunities.
Dr. Al Shueili expressed optimism that these initiatives would boost Oman’s real estate market and contribute to diversifying the national economy.
