Iraq’s Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, announced the completion of designs for the country’s first waste-to-energy plant, to be built in the Nahrawan area south of Baghdad. This innovative project represents a major milestone in Iraq’s shift toward clean energy and its efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
The plant will feature full combustion technology with a generation capacity of 100 megawatts, aligning with the government’s strategy to diversify energy sources and promote sustainability.
Plans are also underway for similar waste-to-energy facilities in other regions, including Abu Ghraib in Baghdad, reflecting Iraq’s broader commitment to renewable energy solutions. Alongside these projects, Iraq is advancing its solar energy initiatives and combined cycle power plants to address increasing electricity demands while prioritizing environmental preservation.
