Qatar’s National Food Security Strategy 2030 seeks to achieve 55% self-sufficiency in local vegetable production, alongside a 50% increase in agricultural land productivity to meet this target.
The strategy also aims to boost local production of red meat to 30% and fish to 80% by 2030, while achieving 100% self-sufficiency in dairy and fresh chicken. These targets build on Qatar’s notable progress in fresh food production over recent years, with over 950 productive farms now operating nationwide and a 100% increase in organic farming land recorded last year.
In 2024, Mahaseel Company for Marketing and Agricultural Services facilitated the sale of over 26 million kilograms of locally grown vegetables. Meanwhile, Qatar’s livestock population, including sheep, goats, camels, and cows, reached 1.4 million. The Ministry of Municipality’s Agricultural Affairs Department continues to support local farms to enhance both production volume and quality.
Agriculture plays a vital role in Qatar’s economic development and food security efforts. The previous National Food Security Strategy (2018-2023) significantly strengthened the country’s food security system by increasing sustainable local production, diversifying import sources to mitigate risks during crises, and establishing strategic food reserves. Initiatives under this plan focused on delivering high-quality food at reasonable prices while addressing climate change.
The newly launched National Food Security Strategy 2030 outlines 17 initiatives designed to ensure sustainable food security through guiding principles such as promoting healthy consumer habits, ensuring food safety and quality, advancing sustainability, and adapting to climate change. The strategy also emphasizes forming effective partnerships to navigate global challenges, including climate change, geopolitical crises, and disruptions to food supply chains.
Aligned with Qatar National Vision 2030, this roadmap envisions a resilient and sustainable food system capable of meeting the country’s future needs while addressing global uncertainties.
