Qatar Cancer Society (QCS), in collaboration with Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Women’s Wellness and Research Center (WWRC) and the National Center for Cancer Care and Research (NCCCR), has introduced the Women’s Cancer Support Groups initiative.
This program reinforces QCS’s commitment to providing psychosocial and community support for women affected by cancer. The launch event marked the beginning of a series of sessions aimed at empowering women with essential information and emotional support.
Expert-Led Discussions on Cancer Awareness and Treatment
The inaugural session featured a panel of medical experts specializing in women’s cancers. Discussions covered key topics such as the importance of early detection, the role of the HPV vaccine in prevention, the impact of genetic factors, available treatment options in Qatar, and the significance of psychological and community support.
Dr. Afaf al-Ansari, senior consultant in Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Gynecological Oncology at WWRC, highlighted the crucial role of early screening, particularly for cervical cancer, in reducing risks and improving treatment outcomes. She emphasized that regular check-ups and HPV vaccinations significantly lower the chances of developing certain types of cancer. She also noted that early detection can help minimize post-diagnosis side effects, including those affecting fertility.
Dr. Hind Elmalik, senior consultant in medical oncology at NCCCR and assistant professor of clinical medicine at WCMQ, discussed the genetic aspects of women’s cancers. She explained how hereditary factors, especially in breast and ovarian cancer cases, can increase risk. She stressed the importance of genetic testing and family medical history awareness in identifying potential risks. Dr. Elmalik also highlighted advancements in chemotherapy and radiation therapy in Qatar, which provide cutting-edge treatments with fewer side effects.
The Role of Psychological and Community Support
Dana Mansour, head of the Psychosocial Support Department at QCS, emphasized the importance of emotional and community support for women undergoing cancer treatment. She explained that support groups create a safe space for patients to share their experiences and challenges, ultimately helping them build emotional resilience.
The session concluded with an inspiring story from a cervical cancer survivor who shared how early detection and regular check-ups led to her full recovery. She credited the unwavering emotional support of her family, particularly her husband, as a crucial factor in her journey to overcoming cancer.
