Muscat is on the brink of a major public transportation transformation, as the Muscat Municipal Council unveils ambitious plans to enhance urban mobility and recreational infrastructure.
During its second meeting, chaired by Sayyid Saud bin Hilal Al Busaidi, Governor of Muscat, the council engaged with representatives from Oman National Transport Company (Mwasalat) and Muscat Municipality to review key initiatives focused on improving public transport and sustainable urban development.
A Comprehensive Transport Strategy
A key focus of the discussions was Mwasalat’s strategic public transport roadmap (2015-2040), presented by CEO Badr bin Mohammed Al Nadabi. The plan is structured into three phases:
- Phase 1 (Completed in 2018): Launched bus services on primary routes, integrated secondary lines, improved taxi operations, and enhanced pedestrian infrastructure.
- Phase 2 (Ongoing): Expanding bus networks, adding branch lines, introducing rapid bus routes, and developing new transport stations.
- Phase 3 (2026-2040): Plans to introduce metro or light rail systems and integrate water taxis into the city’s public transport network.
Al Nadabi also highlighted Mwasalat’s broader transport strategy, covering public transport regulations, urban mobility solutions, marine passenger services, and rail systems. The company currently operates six ferries, 320 minibuses, 116 city buses, and 49 large buses.
By 2040, Mwasalat aims to:
- Serve one million daily public transport passengers
- Achieve net-zero emissions
- Allocate 25% of main roads to public transport routes
- Expand pedestrian zones to 40% of street space
- Reduce traffic accidents
Urban Development & Recreational Projects
Muscat Municipality also introduced two major recreational initiatives:
- Al Ansab Bicycle Track and Street Vendor Project: Featuring a rugged cycling path, shaded seating, children’s play areas, exercise stations, and designated vendor spaces, ensuring accessibility for all.
- Daghmar Healthy Walkway and Cycling Track (Quriyat): A fitness-focused walkway with rest areas, service facilities, and a games section. The first kilometer is complete, with further development planned.
These projects aim to encourage healthier lifestyles, minimize pollution, and boost environmental sustainability while driving local economic growth.
With these forward-thinking developments, Muscat is set to redefine its urban landscape, fostering a more sustainable, efficient, and accessible city for both residents and visitors.
