Qatar has inked a $439 million agreement to establish a 500MW power plant, marking a significant step in the nation’s energy development. The Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) and the Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) have formalized a power purchase agreement for peak electricity generation units at the Ras Abu Fontas Plant.
Previously awarded to QEWC, this Power Purchase project is a strategic initiative aimed at bolstering the stability and reliability of Qatar’s national electricity grid. It also supports the country’s efforts to integrate more solar energy into its energy mix.
The project, with a total contractual capacity of 511 megawatts and a cost of $439 million (QR1.6 billion), is set to commence operations at Ras Abu Fontas in January 2027.
Commenting on the agreement, Minister Saad Sherida Al Kaabi stated, “This agreement marks a pivotal milestone in Qatar’s pursuit of energy security and sustainability, underscoring our commitment to meeting rising energy demands with the highest standards of efficiency and environmental responsibility.”
He added, “This initiative highlights the robust collaboration between the public and private sectors, working hand in hand to enhance the efficiency of the national electricity grid and expand its capacity to incorporate renewable energy sources. This ensures a sustainable electricity supply for various critical sectors.”
