Iraq is closing in on the completion of major infrastructure works at its landmark Grand Al-Faw Port, with several key components now in advanced stages, according to the General Company for Ports.
Director General Farhan Al-Fartousi told Shafaq News that the construction of five berths has been completed, while 85% of the navigation channel, 70% of the submerged tunnel, and 89% of the container yard are now finalized. Additionally, the access road to the national highway network is 99% complete.
“These critical phases are scheduled for completion within the year as part of a strategic implementation plan,” Al-Fartousi said, adding that the project incorporates an advanced electronic management system with smart monitoring and protection technologies. These systems are being implemented in collaboration with international partners such as Daewoo E&C and Italy’s Technital.
Key structural milestones, including the berth walls and container yard foundation, were completed in 2024, with ongoing construction efforts coordinated to ensure the simultaneous delivery of the final five segments.
In related news, Turkey’s Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu announced plans to finalize a bilateral agreement with Iraq to connect Al-Faw Port with Turkish territory “very soon.”
Located in southern Basra province, the $4.6 billion Grand Al-Faw Port covers 54 square kilometers and is designed to transform Iraq into a regional trade and logistics hub. Once operational, it is expected to handle up to 99 million tons of cargo per year, ranking it among the top 10 largest ports worldwide. With a planned depth of 19 meters, it will be capable of accommodating the world’s largest commercial vessels.
