The Africa and Middle East region is projected to install 2.9 gigawatts (GW) of new onshore wind power in 2025, according to the Global Wind Energy Council’s (GWEC) Global Wind Report 2025. The report estimates that Africa will contribute 1.6 GW of the total, with the Middle East adding 1.3 GW.
GWEC Market Intelligence highlights Egypt’s pivotal role in driving growth, noting that several multi-gigawatt wind projects are either under construction or ready to break ground. From 2025 to 2030, Africa is expected to achieve record annual installations.
In 2024, Egypt and Morocco led the region’s wind capacity expansion, with Egypt adding 793.5 MW and Morocco installing 520 MW. Overall, Africa and the Middle East doubled their onshore wind additions in 2024, reaching 2 GW—up from 959 MW in 2023.
In the Middle East, wind energy developments were reported in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Iran in 2024. However, Saudi Arabia is expected to be the only country in the region to contribute gigawatt-scale additions through 2030.
Between 2024 and 2030, the region is forecast to install a total of 25 GW in new onshore wind capacity, with 69% of that growth coming from Africa and the remaining 31% from the Middle East.
