Sports and recreation tourism ranks among the priorities that Qatar gives strong impetus in developing a robust tourism industry.
“Sports and recreation tourism is one of the priority tourism sub-sectors in Qatar, and the country holds close to 80 sporting events and world-class competitions across a multitude of sporting disciplines annually,” said Hassan Al Ibrahim, Chief Tourism Development Officer at Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA), while addressing the opening of the 4th World Mindsports Championships yesterday. Held at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC), the nine-day Championships are being hosted for the first time in the Middle East.
“The Mindsports World Championships have previously been hosted in the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom and France. In hosting its fourth edition, we are pleased to be yet again confirming Qatar’s position as a pioneer in bringing international sporting events to the Arab world,” he said.
“As an indoor event, this championship demonstrates the country’s commitment and ability to host sports competitions throughout all seasons of the year,” he added.
Arabic scrabble are being introduced for the first time in the Championships, making this edition of the tournament unique.
We are particularly proud that Doha will witness the first time E-sports and Arabic Scrabble are included in the Mindsports World Championships; a tradition which we hope will continue at future editions of the international competition,” said Al Ibrahim.
