Thyssenkrupp has been awarded a contract to supply 251 elevators and 390 escalators for Lines 1 and 2 of Riyadh Metro in Saudi Arabia.
Under the terms of the deal, the Germany-headquartered lift manufacturer will take responsibility for the design, manufacture, supply, installation, and maintenance of the 641 units.
Commenting on the contract, Abdul Hamid El Ayoubi, chief executive officer of Thyssenkrupp Elevator (Middle East), said: “This project will bring great benefits to Riyadh’s society, economy, and environment.
“Thyssenkrupp Elevator is proud to play a relevant role in the development of the population’s mobility within the city,” he added.
At 176km, the $22bn (SAR82.6bn) Riyadh Metro project is set to become the largest mass transit system in the world upon completion.
Part of Arriyadh Development Authority’s (ADA) Riyadh Public Transit System initiative, the metro aims to provide sustainable public transport services to minimise the use of private cars.
Work on Riyadh Metro began in 2014, and is expected to complete by the end of 2018.
