Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has been awarded a contract to build a $135m stadium for Qatar's 2022 World Cup, according to reports.
"As part of a joint venture, L&T will serve as a contractor building the 40,000 seat Al Rayyan stadium," a Qatari government official, who declined to be named as he was not authorized to speak publicly, was quoted by Reuters as saying.
L&T, who declined to comment, is involved in infrastructure projects in the Gulf including the construction of a metro line in Doha.
In May, L&T's group executive chairman said the company was bidding for projects in Asia and Africa to counter a slowdown in its key Middle East market due to a slump in oil prices.
Al Rayyan stadium will include cooling technology to help with Qatar's hot climate.
Following the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament, the stadium's capacity will be reduced to 21,000 – with the upper tiers of seats being sent to a developing nation.
Last month, it was revealed that Qatar will require between $8bn (QAR29.1bn) and $10bn (QAR36.4bn) in construction costs for its 2022 FIFA World Cup stadiums' development, Hassan Al Thawadi, the secretary-general of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC), said up to $200bn will be spent on wider infrastructure required to host the tournament.
