Qatar’s 2022 World Cup stadium construction costs will amount to between $8 billion to $10 billion, according to Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) secretary general Hassan Al Thawadi.
Up to $200 billion is being spent on wider infrastructure required to host the World Cup, he said at the Chatham House Policy Institute in London, in quotes published by the Associated Press.
"Monitoring enforcement mechanisms are being strengthened on a continuous basis, labor inspector numbers are being increased, site inspections are being increased, and scrutiny of recruitment agencies has been increased," Al Thawadi said.
"However change will not happen overnight and there are many issues on this matter that require further action, and more can be done."
Jürgen Müller, head of Planning & Infrastructure and head of FIFA World Cup 2022, said that Qatar's infrastructure and stadium preparation is “well on track.”
“Everybody knows it’s not only towards 2022, they are working towards longer plans for 2030, so this step is only one step in the bigger picture.”
Othman Zarzour, competition venues deputy executive director at the Supreme Committee, said: "By the end of this year the Khalifa International Stadium will be the first proposed host venue to complete major construction and will be among the first stadiums in the world to provide field lighting using LED technology."
