Elecnor has won the $112mn contract to build a 75MW wind farm in the south of Jordan.
The Spanish firm will install 33 turbines supplied by compatriot Gamesa in Ma’an 220km south of the capital Amman.
Elecnor beat off competition from five other bidders for the tender which kicked off in 2013.
The power plant is expected to be operational by the end of 2015, energy minister Mohammad Hamed said following the signing.
“This is a very important agreement for Jordan and will form the basis of the second wind power energy project in Jordan,” said the minister in comments reported by the Jordan Times.
Jordan’s first utility scale renewable energy project is the 117MW Tafila Wind Farm
"By the end of 2015, renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 500 megawatts will be connected to the grid [in Jordan]," said the minister.
The project is financed by a grant from the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, he added.
