The construction in Masdar City is strictly following green building codes, which will help reduce energy demand by 56 per cent and potable water demand by 54 per cent.
Powered entirely by renewable energy, Masdar City combines passive and intelligent design to showcase how an urban environment can accommodate denser populations with fewer resources, Masdar officials say.
Key features of the city include the establishment of the first commercial building housing companies, Siemens regional headquarters, the Masdar Institute campus with 337 students and 73 faculty and the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena).
Masdar Institute Campus with 12 buildings makes up the majority of the city. As of September this year, 417 students were enrolled and study under 82 faculty members from 28 nations. An additional 119 people work as administrators and support staff. With the recent expansion, the institute now covers 163,000 square metre of space. Recent expansion has added 221 apartments and three laboratories. The institute is powered by renewable energy.
Another important facility is the Incubator Building, Masdar’s first commercial property. The 10,000 square meter Incubator Building offers competitively priced office space to companies interested in setting up operations in the city.
Another attraction — Multi-Use Hall — provides a well-equipped space suitable for a wide range of activities and events. It also has a swimming-pool, a gymnasium and a basketball court.
