Port of Beirut (PoB) continues to witness a booming activity. The port’s revenues amounted to $145.72M up to August, a 25% year-on-year (y-o-y) increase mainly due to substantial container activity. The latter (including transshipment) rose by 8% y-o-y to 760,558 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit).
Given the port’s limited capacity, transshipment alone was scaled down by 14% y-o-y to 247,482 TEU, making room for the growing inflow of containers, which surged by 23% to 513,076 TEU. In fact, MSC’s transshipment volume grew by 7.2% y-o-y up to August, a much slower pace than the 8% recorded up to July and the 11% posted up to June. The reduction of CMA CGM’s transshipment volume is more drastic, plummeting by 30% by August in line with falls of 29% by July and 32% by June.
Imported and Exported merchandise through the port rose by 14.5% to 5,492 thousand tons while the number of imported cars edged up by 11% to 61,155 by August. Meanwhile, the number of vessels docking at the port registered a marginal upturn of 1% to reach 1,416 units in the first eight months of the year.
