Saudi Electricity Company announced the completion of the project to transfer fuel to the Qassim power station through a pipeline branching from the main East/West Aramco pipeline. The new project once operational will end the daily journey of 300 fuel tankers that use the Riyadh-Qassim road.
Abdul Salam Al-Yemeni, executive vice president of public affairs at the company, said the cost for constructing the pipeline amounted to SR600 million.
"It will increase capacity production of the Qassim station, and boost fuel supply stability," said Al-Yemeni, referring to the 240-km pipeline extension from Al-Dawadmi to Qassim passing through dunes, valleys and other rocky areas.
He said that the project faced many challenges since it began, including the transfer of ownership of land and main roads. "But with the cooperation of the competent bodies we managed to overcome such obstacles," he said.
One aspect of the project is that the Qassim station will be a main hub to transport fuel to Hail and the Northern stations "to ease the burden on Aramco."
The operational pipeline will ease also the burden on the main road connecting Riyadh with Qassim, subsequently minimizing truck and commuter accidents. "This will be reflected also on the trucks and their virtual life-span, and on the environment," he said.
