The Iraqi government is expecting the Castle Residential Complex project, estimated to cost around $60 million, in the province of Dhi Qar to be completed in July 2015, according to a statement released to Zawya by an official source from the country's Ministry of Construction and Housing (MCH).
Eng. Abdul-Sahib Abdul-Amir Al-Hamdani, director of housing in Dhi Qar, said the housing development is part of a series of projects being implemented by the MCH.
"The Castle Residential Complex project includes 558 residential units built on a land area of around 60,000 square meters," said Al-Hamdani.
The delivery of accommodations at Castle Residential will prove beneficial in addressing Iraq's burgeoning need for houses. According to the MCH, the country would require around 70,000 residential units are per year until the end of 2015.
Al-Hamdani added that the work site has been handed over for development in June, with the contract signed in July and construction work expected to commence soon after. "We expect the project will be completed by July 2015, with a completion period of around 30 months."
Dhi Qar's director of housing indicated that the project includes administrative services and basic infrastructure, in addition to markets, a firefighting center, telephone and internet lines as well as entertainment venues.
Dergham Mohammed, an economist and head of the Economic Media Center in Iraq, believes that the new residential complexes will be built based on modern specifications as the country moves towards urbanization.
"Modern buildings [are needed] in the cities [to replace] existing buildings [that are aging]. No modern buildings have been erected in Iraq for decades," he said.
