The Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA) said it hoped traffic congestion would ease as it had implemented 95% of the Al-Orouba and Abu Bakr Assidiq road extension through Riyadh Airbase. Al-Orouba Road, which runs from east to west, will be connected to Abdurrahman Al-Ghafiqi Street in the east.
The Abu Bakr Road, which runs from north to south, will be linked to the Salahuddin Al-Ayoubi Road in the south. "Upon completion, Al-Orouba and Abu Bakr Assidiq streets will play a major role in mitigating traffic congestion in the Kingdom's capital city, serving more than 560,000 vehicles daily," ADA said in its website.
The project involves the implementation of new 11-km highways and the establishment of tunnels running under the new and existing runways of the Riyadh Airbase with a total length of 2.2 km. ADA added that access and exit ramps were also built where necessary in order to connect the off-site roads with the primary road network. A traffic management system will be supporting these roads by using variable message signs. Storm water and groundwater pipes are set on both sides of the roads to ensure proper drainage.
The project will help ease traffic on Makkah, King Abdulaziz and King Fahd roads. This will reduce the number of kilometers traveled within the city by 129,000 km per day and the number of hours spent on the roads by more than 58,800 hours a day.
