Schoolchildren had the opportunity to try their hand at science at Qatar Sustainability Expo.
More than 400 children from the Lebanese International School and Birla Public School visited the expo at Doha Exhibition Centre, as part of its mission to promote public awareness of environmental issues.
The pupils watched a science show about water, during which they had the chance to take part in games and quizzes. They were also given a tour of the expo and they signed their names on the pledge wall to show their commitment on helping protect the environment.
At the Kid’s Zone they discovered how old aluminium cans, empty plastic bottles and even potatoes can be used to make eco toys. They were each given an eco-friendly gift to take home and also received a plant as part of Qatar’s Million Trees Campaign.
The science show and Kid’s Zone has been organised to help children learn about how science works, as well as about recycling.
Sirine Abi Rached, the organiser, said: “I think it is the best way to help children to learn about science, by getting them to have a go at making one of our kits. There are 12 different kits to make and each one explains something different.
“For example, some of the smaller children were surprised when they discovered that the Sun could make something move. They learn about solar energy at school but they don’t really understand what it is until they see it in practice.”
As well as enjoying interactive science experiments and playing with multimedia games, children can also watch a short animated film at the planetarium. The story involved a grandfather telling his grandchildren about the Earth from the Ice Age and dinosaurs to water and volcanos.
The Kids’ Zone is open every evening at the Expo, which is being held at Doha Exhibition Centre from 4pm to 9pm until December 7.
