According to a recent study released by the Doha-based Gulf Organization for Industrial Consulting (GOIC) estimated the investments of five major aluminum smelters in the Gulf region, mainly in Qatar, Bahrain, Sultanate of Oman and UAE to have reached $22 billion.
The study published in a book, indicated the total production capacity of the five smelters reaching 3.6 billion tons of raw aluminum which makes up around 9 % of the world's aluminum production.
According to the study, the rate of the aluminum production capacity could reach 6 million tons by year 2012, and 9 million tons by year 2020 (13% of world's aluminum production) in light of the current schemes adopted across the GCC to set up some leading projects.
A press statement issued by GOIC in Doha Tuesday, said the book audits and analyzes the process of trade and industry of aluminum products within the Gulf States.
The book also enclosed statistical information and indexes related to the manufacturing, investment, trade and marketing aspects of aluminum industry within the GCC states as well as forecasting the industry's future according to the projects the states planned.
