Port of Beirut (PoB) revenues rose by 0.12% since last year; amounting to $68.10M up till April 2014 due to the Syrian turmoil which transferred shipping activity in favor of PoB after closing Syria’s main ports. Total container activity including transshipment swelled by 7.06% from last year, to reach 379,922 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU).
Container activity excluding transshipment jumped to 240,897 TEU, compared to its previous year value of 232,253 TEU. Transshipment alone surged up by 13.37% year-on-year (y-o-y) to 139,025 TEU. The total volume of merchandise (imported and exported) augmented by a yearly 6.11% to 2.84M tons.
Imported cars increased by 8.17% to reach 31,387 cars. However, up until April 2014, the number of vessels that docked at the country’s main port went down by 5.20% to reach 674 vessels. Remarkably, CMA CGM’s transshipment volume rose by 39.16% y-o-y to 58,480 TEU, while that of MSC expanded by a yearly 6.10% to 75,628 TEU.
