The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) is set to award projects worth up to QR45bn over the next five years, said a senior official of the authority, yesterday.
These projects are of different types which include construction and infrastructure development projects such as highways, roads, drainage system and buildings for various purposes.
“We are having a lot of projects in the pipeline and going to spend between QR40bn and QR45bn over the next 3-5 years. It will cover all our sectors. These funds will primarily be spend on projects for constructing highways, roads, drainage within Doha and some outside of Doha,” Ahmed Al Ansari, Director of Technical Office at Ashghal, told The Peninsula on the sidelines of a press conference held to announce the launch the fourth edition of ‘Moushtarayat 2019’- the Government Procurement and Contracting Conference & Exhibition.
Providing further details about the upcoming projects, Al Ansari added: “For the Expressway program, we have about QR18bn for the next 3-5 years. And for local roads we have QR20bn to QR25bn and for drainage system, we have approximately QR10bn to be spend over the same period of time.”
Ashghal is working to put all the needful information related to these projects at the upcoming ‘Moushtarayat 2019’ exhibition, which is to take place from March 31 to April 2, 2019. The public works authority intends to alert the industry in advance so that they can build and develop their future plans about how to get engage in the future projects.
The annual event, which started in 2016, offers billions of riyals of business opportunities for local industries and companies, manufacturers, contractors and suppliers of construction materials, and other goods and services.
The public authority also offers business opportunities for service providers such as companies that deal in asset management services, which constitute a significant part of Ashghal’s operations.
“We are looking for contractors for operations and management of our assets. And we are also looking for main contractors to get involved for our future projects. We expect local companies to participate for those opportunities,” said Al Ansari.
The upcoming projects are at different stages. Some are at design stage, and for some the design works have been finished. “Some new jobs are coming our way. We will plan, design and put them into the market very soon,” he said.
On the government’s plan to develop project on the PPP (public-private partnership) model, the official said that Ashghal is studying and looking at various opportunities but “speaking anything about it would be premature”. However, he hinted that some projects on PPP model are to be announced soon.
