Oman is looking to join the increased interest in aquaculture that is currently taking place in the Middle East, having more than doubled production levels in 2019.
New statistics released by Oman’s Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries revealed that the sultanate’s aquaculture production rose by 133 percent in 2019 compared to 2018, to reach 1,054 tons with a total value of 2 million rial (£4.1 million).
However, according to the Muscat Daily if the current crop of fish farms that are either in the planning or advanced stage of development are factored in, revenues from the sector should reach 222 million rial (£459 million) by 2023.
In 2019 production was limited to sea bream and tilapia – the former accounting for 862 tons and the latter for 192 tons. However, projects for species including shrimp, abalone, sea bream, cobia and seaweed are currently in the pipeline.
