Agrico, a leading agricultural firm in Qatar, has opened a new urban farm at Qatar Foundation’s (QF) Green Island. This project, a collaboration between Agrico and QF, was announced by Agrico’s managing director, Nasser Ahmed al-Khalaf, on social media.
Al-Khalaf expressed pride in the partnership and thanked Ouassim Alami, strategic initiatives advisor at QF, and Nawal al-Sulaiti, sustainability manager at QF, for their efforts in establishing Green Island. He emphasized the farm’s goal to inspire students and young innovators to develop sustainable agricultural solutions for Qatar and beyond.
“The initiative aims to motivate and educate the next generation—the future of our country. Their creativity can help advance this technology locally and generate solutions that will benefit both Qatar and the world,” said al-Khalaf. According to QF, Green Island serves as a multidisciplinary learning hub, offering the community hands-on education in sustainability and encouraging collaboration.
A key focus of the initiative is environmental education, with schools participating in field trips to learn about recycling and sustainable practices. Agrico’s urban farm joins several other organizations contributing to Green Island’s projects, including Arab Engineering Bureau, Milaha, QatarEnergy, Seashore Group, and Al-Awalia, which will lead upcycling workshops transforming demolition materials into art.
Agrico’s urban farm adds to its existing operations, which supply fresh produce and seafood to over 1,400 outlets across Qatar. With advanced technology, the company achieves year-round production while minimizing water and energy usage. Agrico also provides customized farming solutions for aspiring farmers.
