The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) awarded contracts worth more than QR2bn ($548 million) for construction of 44 new schools, including 15 kindergartens, across the country.
At a briefing held in the presence of HE the Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr Mohamed Abdul Wahed Ali al-Hammadi, Ashghal president Nasser Ali al-Mawlawi said the eight companies which were awarded the 11 contracts had been given a fourth quarter deadline of 2014 for the projects' completion.
At the contracts signing ceremony, al-Mawlawi vowed Ashghal would work closely with the Education Ministry and other government bodies to develop more schools and other facilities in the coming months. "In line with the Qatar National Vision 2030, Ashghal is committed to supporting an advanced educational system by building modern and technologically-advanced institutions across the country," he said.
Describing education as one of the main components of the country's social progress, al-Mawlawi said Ashghal would ensure that all institutions were completed on schedule.
The official said that Ashghal had delivered 26 schools and kindergartens worth QR1bn last year. Before the beginning of the next academic year, it would hand over 16 educational institutions, including kindergartens, the combined value of which is about QR442mn.
The new schools being built will have IT laboratories, sport and recreational halls, activity rooms, libraries and classrooms.
"Their design is in line with the Qatari specifications for people with special needs, equipped with ramps at entrance and exit, and special specifications for bathrooms and other areas," pointed out al-Mawlawi.
Green building requirements, including installation of systems and equipment to save water and energy, has been considered while designs of the buildings were approved, he said.
The new schools and kindergartens will be built in Al Waab, Al Aziziya, Umm Ghuwalina, Al Rayyan, Aba al Hayran, Old Airport, Onaiza, Al Wukair, Al Khissa, Al Luqta, Madinat Khalifa (South), Madinat Khalifa (North), Lijmiliya, Rawdat Egdaim, Al Mearad, Jeryan Jenaihat, Mebireek, Al Hareen, Nuaija Rawdat Al Hamama, Al Thameed, Al Hilal, Al Thumama, Al Karaana, Mesaieed, Leghwairiya, Rawdat Rashid and Umm Salal Mohamed.
