An automotive company is working on a project for establishing an automobile factory in Sulaimaniya.
The company, called Mario Automotive Company, is planning to start with assembling imported parts to produce cars. This will be done in cooperation with a number of Chinese companies.
The plant is to be built on 22.5 hectares of land in the Sulaimaniya Industrial area, some 27 kilometers west of the city.
Salah Hussein Hamakhan, industrial areas' director at the Suleimaniya Directorate General of Investment, says Mario Company has acquired an investment license.
"As per the application documents, the investor is planning to assemble cars using imported parts at the first phase and then try to make parts domestically and then assemble them," said Hamakhan.
This effort is an important step in developing the Region's poor industrial sector.
Experts argue this lack of domestic production and dependency on imports makes the economy vulnerable and fragile.
