Qatar's building industry surged during August with the awarding of building permits jumping by 67%.
The Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics (MDPS) released a report on 7 September, citing that a significant increase in Qatar's building market has been noted in all municipalities.
The total number of building permits issued in all seven municipalities of the country rose 67%, from 369 in July to 616 in August this year.
The Al Shamal municipality topped the list by 240%.
The increase noted in other municipalities included Doha with 19%, Rayyan with 127%, Wakrah with 38%, Umm Slal with 72%, Al Daayen with 69%, and Al Khor with 32%.
Receiving the greatest number of building permits in August was Rayyan municipality, compared to the other six municipalities in Qatar, the report said.
In receipt of 234 building permits, the Rayyan municipality, including Sheehaniya, made up 38% of the total building permits issued in August, Qatar Tribune reports.
Doha municipality which came in second with 100 permits or 16% of the total, closely followed by Al Wakrah with 91 permits, Al Da'ayen with 81 permits, Al Khor with 50 permits, Umm Slal with 43 permits, and Al Shamal with 17 permits.
Of the permit types, more than half were issued for building new structures, comprising 351 permits in total, including both residential and non-residential.
New buildings constituted 57% of the total amount.
237 permits were issued for add-ons and 28 for fencing, contributing to 38% and 5% of the total respectively.
Of the new building permits, the report showed that villas led trend with 151 permits, accounting for 48%.
‘Dwellings of housing loans’ were next in line with 121 permits, or 39% and apartment buildings with 35 permits, or 39%.
Leading non-residential buildings permits were commercial buildings, with 20 permits issued in August, making up 51% of the total in that category.
This was followed by industrial buildings and factories, each being awarded nine permits, mosques with six and other non-residential buildings with eight.
MDPS noted in the report that building permits data was of specific importance as it is viewed as an indicator for the performance of the construction sector, which contributes significantly to the national economy.
The monthly data is a collaboration between the Ministry of Municipality and Environment and the MDPS.
