His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Chairman of the Executive Council, and the "My Community – A City for Everyone" launched an initiative in November 2013, which aims to fully transform Dubai into a disabled-friendly city by 2020.
A Project titled “Accessible Environments for People with Disability based on Universal Design” was announced in April 2016.
“The Dubai Code” will be a world class standard for accessibility in a modern urban environment and is seen as a milestone on the roadmap to achieving the Dubai 2020 vision.
Future Accessibility & Assistive Technology Dubai will be held on 10-11 October 2016 in Dubai, UAE. This summit is organized by ACM, with the support of Dubai Municipality, and will focus on defining codes and regulations, consulting community stakeholders and investing in assistive solutions to improve urban accessibility for all by 2020.
Now is the time
All new buildings, services and facilities — offices or residential towers, schools, stadiums, parks, and public spaces in Dubai will have to be built in compliance with disability-friendly standards. Existing buildings and facilities will be “retrofitted” to make them disability-friendly as well.
Working groups have been formed within the Dubai government departments to develop the project which is already moving forward under a study being led by a specialist consultant. The budget for the study alone is AED 10 million.
