Dubai's oldest mall, the Centre in Deira, will complete a Dhs2 billion expansion effort this summer.
The center, which first opened in 1981, says work on almost doubling its retail space with the addition of 150 additional stores and food outlets should be done by "mid-2013".
The completion of the latest phase of work at the center – which welcomed new hotel and luxury apartment projects in December – will see the unveiling of refurbished cinemas and a large entertainment zone that the center’s management say will feature "an indoor rollercoaster" and ice rink.
Al Ghurair Properties managing director Ibrahim Al Ghurair said the mall expansion is a "vital component" in the ongoing development of a "revitalized" Deira area.
"With the expansion, we aim to benefit from the ongoing potential in this vitally important area, as well as contribute to its future development," he said.
The shopping mall expansion will add an extra 375,000 sq ft of leasable retail space.
