Expats in Qatar sent QR30.8 billion to home countries in 2011

Remittances routed by expatriate workers to their home countries soared to about QR30.8bn, a 4.5 percent increase in 2011 compared to 2010, said a report issued by the Qatar Central Bank ( QCB ). Total remittances during the past five years reached to QR122bn, Al Sharq reported recently. Expatriates are getting more salaries in Qatar compared to the employees in their own countries, therefore they have better opportunity to save their surplus incomes and send to their families, said the daily.
As per the date of the QCB there are QR20,000 an average remittances of a foreign workers during one year. Some 1.5 million foreign workers are living in the country, said the latest report issued by the Qatar Statistic Authority (QSA) in 2011.
Ninety percent of the total population of the country is foreign works. Most of them are working in the private sector especially in the construction sector.
Remittances increase in summer vacations and ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, and on the occasions of Eids, said Abdul Azim Ahmad Mabruk, General Manager of Al Jazeera Exchange.
