Five thousand people entered, but only five were lucky enough to win brand new electric cars on the closing day of the Qatar Sustainability Expo.
After entering a ballot, the fortunate few had their names chosen at a celebration outside the Doha Exhibition Centre, becoming some of the first drivers of this innovative type of vehicle here in Qatar.
The MyCar electric car, produced by American manufacturer GreenTech Automotive, is 100 per cent electric. Capable of recharging on simple household electrical outlets, it can drive for up to 115 miles before needing to be charged.
The cars were part of the many environmentally friendly initiatives showcased at the Expo, which was held during COP18/CMP8 Doha, the annual United Nations Climate Change Conference.
Mona Al-Sulaiti, the Director of Exhibitions and Venues for COP18/CMP8 Doha, said that the Expo raffle was organised to bring attention to the benefits of electric cars, which have no emissions.
She hoped that the visibility of the car – it has bright colours and a flashy design reminiscent of a sportier version of the SmartCar – would entice more buyers for the clean technology in Qatar.
“This is only the beginning,” she said.
One of the winners, Alaa Al-Sheikh, a 28-year-old hospital technician from Sudan, was ecstatic about her prize car. Beaming and surrounded by friends, she yelled, “This is my first time to win in my life!”
Ms. Al-Sheikh said that the unique design of car would make her feel “special”.
