Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani announced that Iraq is seeking membership in the International Solar Alliance (ISA) to advance solar energy adoption and combat climate change.
The announcement came during a meeting in Baghdad with Sumin Bagchi, India’s newly appointed ambassador to Iraq. Al-Sudani discussed the potential of holding the 19th session of the High Joint Committee meetings and establishing an Iraq-India Economic Cooperation Council, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of forming an Iraq-India Business Council and organizing visits by Indian companies to explore opportunities in Iraq.
Headquartered in India with over 120 member countries, the ISA focuses on promoting efficient solar energy use to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
In response to Iraq’s increasing energy demands, the government is actively working to diversify its energy sources and achieve sustainability in the sector. In 2023, the Ministry of Electricity pursued agreements with major firms, including China’s PetroChina to build a 750-megawatt power plant in Muthanna and France’s TotalEnergies to develop a 1,000-megawatt plant in Basra.
These initiatives are part of a broader national strategy to generate 12,000 megawatts of solar energy by 2030. The Iraqi cabinet has already approved plans to award contracts to specialized companies for producing 7,500 megawatts of solar energy.
