Iraq is evaluating three proposals from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) for the development of Baghdad’s international airport, including the potential construction of a new airport, according to the Transport Ministry.
The other options under consideration are expanding the existing airport or combining both approaches. “The third proposal involves upgrading the current airport while constructing a new one, with the two facilities interconnected,” the Ministry stated via the official Iraqi News Agency (INA).
The statement noted that multiple contracts would be awarded to both local and international companies, regardless of the chosen option. The development aims to accommodate increasing air traffic.
In September 2023, the IFC signed an agreement with the Iraqi government to advance Baghdad Airport’s development through a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
