Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has inaugurated six major industrial projects valued at $1.171 billion in the southern province of Muthanna, signaling a strong push to boost local cement production and reduce reliance on imports.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Al-Sudani officially launched commercial operations at Najmat Al-Samawa Cement Plant 2, which has a daily production capacity of 6,000 tons.
He also laid the foundation stones for several other major facilities:
Al-Arabi Cement Plant
Khairat Al-Muthanna Cement Plant
Al-Ittihad Cement Plant
Each of these plants will also have a capacity of 6,000 tons per day.
In addition, construction commenced on the Al-Samawa Cement Plant, expected to produce 6,600 tons per day, and a caustic soda production plant with a capacity of 1,200 tons per day.
Al-Sudani praised the collaborative efforts of both the private sector and relevant government bodies in launching these strategic initiatives, emphasizing their role in revitalizing Iraq’s industrial sector.
He highlighted that the primary objective of these projects is to supply the domestic market with essential construction materials, especially amid the surge in housing and infrastructure developments across the country.
The Prime Minister noted that Iraq is currently building more than one million housing units in Baghdad and other provinces. An additional 200,000 housing units are under construction across seven major residential developments—each requiring a significant volume of cement and related materials.
“The government is committed to supporting the local industry and reducing dependency on imports, especially in the construction sector,” Al-Sudani stated.
The $1.171 billion investment in Muthanna reflects the province’s growing potential and the government’s focus on long-term industrial sustainability.
