Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has unveiled a transformative infrastructure initiative in Dhi Qar province, launching three major projects totaling approximately $1.67 billion. This comprehensive plan aims to enhance electricity generation, healthcare services, and urban infrastructure, signaling a significant step toward regional development and improved public services.
Key Projects Initiated:
Nasiriyah Combined-Cycle Power Plant: A 921-megawatt facility powered by natural gas, developed in collaboration with Germany’s Siemens. Situated within the existing steam power station’s grounds, this plant is expected to bolster Iraq’s national power grid and may integrate hydrogen technology in the future.
Integrated Medical City in Nasiriyah: Marking Iraq’s first endeavor of this kind, the 132-dunam complex will encompass 13 healthcare facilities, including seven hospitals with a combined capacity of 700 beds. The city will offer specialized units for oncology, internal medicine, pediatrics, emergency care, consulting clinics, a forensic medicine center, a blood bank, and staff housing. The project is valued at approximately $374 million.
Infrastructure Development in Suq al-Shuyukh District: With a budget of around $385 million, this project aims to deliver fully serviced neighborhoods equipped with sewer networks, stormwater systems, treatment facilities, and expanded green areas utilizing treated water for irrigation.
During his visit, Prime Minister al-Sudani emphasized the government’s dedication to delivering essential services and fostering development in underserved regions. He highlighted the stable security environment in Dhi Qar as a facilitator for such initiatives, stating, “This district has endured long periods of neglect. It is time to provide justice through infrastructure and basic services.”
Additional Developments:
Nasiriyah International Airport: The Prime Minister inspected ongoing construction, noting that the overall completion stands at 47%. The runway and taxiway are complete, with work progressing on the passenger terminal, VIP hall, and support facilities.
Cultural Tourism in Ur: Al-Sudani visited the historic city of Ur to review cultural tourism projects initiated last year, underscoring the government’s commitment to preserving and promoting Iraq’s rich heritage.
These initiatives reflect Iraq’s strategic approach to revitalizing its infrastructure, aiming to enhance the quality of life for its citizens and stimulate economic growth through improved public services and facilities.
