Iraq’s Ministry of Water Resources has increased its tree-planting target to 500,000 seedlings as part of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani’s national initiative to plant five million trees across the country.
According to Mohammed Awad Kazem, Head of the Ministry’s Afforestation and Nurseries Department, the campaign is part of a broader plan running from 2023 to 2025, covering both spring and autumn planting seasons.
So far, the ministry has planted 54,000 seedlings across 102 locations in Baghdad and other provinces (excluding the Kurdistan Region). The revised target reflects both the initiative’s progress and the growing importance of environmental restoration in Iraq.
To support the effort, the ministry recently received 38,700 seedlings from the Ministry of Agriculture, along with an additional 5,000 seedlings delivered this week.
The project initially focused on ministry-owned sites in Baghdad, and has since expanded to other provinces as part of Iraq’s nationwide greening initiative.
