The General Company for Iraqi Railways (GCIR) has signed a consultancy agreement with European firm PTV to study and design the rehabilitation of the Basra-Rabiya railway line and a new circular railway around Baghdad.
GCIR Director General Jabbar Alaiwi told the Iraqi News Agency that the project aims to modernize the existing Basra-Baghdad-Mosul-Rabiya railway to enhance connectivity and support the Al-Faw Port, which is expected to commence operations by mid-2025. The agreement also includes plans for a new double-track railway with bridges and crossings.
Additionally, GCIR is developing a circular railway around Baghdad, extending from Yusufiya to Taji via Baghdad Airport, to alleviate congestion in the city center.
