The Iraq Cabinet — chaired by Prime Minister Adil Abd Al-Mahdi — has approved funding for the completion of construction work on Phase 2 of the Kirkuk Unified Water Project, which is touted as one of the largest water projects in the country.
According to a statement on the Cabinet’s website, the funds were granted to Iraq’s Ministry of Construction, Housing, Municipalities and Public Works.
Following a cabinet meeting, funds were also allocated to the country’s Ministry of Justice for the construction of a prison and for the refurbishment of its existing facilities.
In July 2019, the Government of Iraq had signed a loan agreement with Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) in Baghdad for official development assistance (ODA) loan of $1.01bn for its Basra Refinery Upgrading Project 2, which is expected to improve production output in Iraq.
The news comes a month after German engineering firm Siemens was awarded a $318.3m contract to supply gas and steam turbines and generators and provide long-term power generation services, for the 840 MW Maisan Combined Cycle Power Plant in Iraq.
