Iraq’s Minister of Electricity, Ziad Ali Fadel, has instructed the installation of 77 E-House distribution stations in high-congestion areas and the development of new feeders nationwide in preparation for the upcoming summer season.
According to a statement received by Shafaq News, Fadel commenced on-site inspections at the Baghdad Electricity Distribution Directorate, reaffirming his commitment to personally oversee distribution projects and accelerate efforts to address network bottlenecks before summer.
During a meeting with the directorate’s administrative and technical staff, the minister emphasized that his presence was not intended to undermine local officials but to enhance and expedite project execution.
Fadel outlined an urgent plan involving the installation of 77 E-House distribution stations, 77 feeders with a 33 kV capacity, 462 feeders with an 11 kV capacity, and 2,250 distribution transformers to alleviate congestion.
He also expressed gratitude for the support of Prime Minister Mohammad Shia Al-Sudani, highlighting the release of necessary financial allocations to expedite critical projects and improve the country’s electricity distribution networks. Fadel called for strict timelines to ensure projects are completed efficiently and on schedule.
The minister underscored the importance of direct engagement at project sites, stating that field visits by officials foster greater responsibility among workers and enhance operational efficiency.
Iraq continues to grapple with an annual electricity crisis during summer as temperatures rise, driving increased power demand that outpaces supply. While technical assessments suggest the country requires 40,000 megawatts of electricity, current production barely exceeds 25,000 megawatts. Despite spending over $75 billion on the electricity sector in the past two decades, challenges persist.
