A major container yard at Iraq’s Faw Port is on track for completion in the second half of 2025, nearly a year after the project’s launch, according to a Transport Ministry official.
Spanning 1.2 million square metres, the yard will support five large piers constructed in early 2025 by South Korea’s Hyundai Engineering & Construction, under a $2.6 billion contract awarded five years ago.
“The container yard is progressing on schedule, with around 89% of the work already completed. It will be fully operational in the second half of 2025,” said Maytham Safi, Director of Information at the Ministry.
Designed to serve one of the world’s largest container terminals, the facility will have an annual handling capacity of approximately 3.5 million containers.
The first phase of Faw Port, located in southern Iraq, is scheduled for completion in early 2026. The port will be connected to a $17 billion rail and motorway project stretching 1,200 kilometers to Iraq’s northern border with Turkey.
