Iraq’s growing commitment to renewable energy is attracting significant attention, with around 150 local and international companies expressing interest in the country’s upcoming solar energy projects. This interest comes as Iraq works toward diversifying its energy sources and achieving self-sufficiency in electricity.
The national team for renewable energy projects announced that a series of large-scale solar initiatives are set to begin in the summer of 2025. These efforts are part of a broader national strategy to promote clean energy and reduce dependency on traditional power sources.
According to Naseer Karim, head of the national renewable energy team, the Iraqi government is formulating policies to enable citizens to access solar power without additional financial burden. He emphasized that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has shown strong support for the integration of solar energy into the national grid, especially with a focus on consumption management.
Karim noted that solar power offers a smart and efficient solution to Iraq’s long-standing electricity challenges. Projects are planned for multiple provinces, featuring smart meters and modern solar systems to ensure efficient energy use.
Importantly, these projects will be implemented through an investment model, minimizing pressure on the national budget while supporting the enhancement of Iraq’s electrical infrastructure.
As part of these efforts, a 2-megawatt solar power plant is currently under construction to supply 80–90% of the electricity needs of the Iraqi government palace. Karim highlighted this initiative as a symbolic and strategic move, encouraging wider adoption of solar energy across the public, private, commercial, industrial, and agricultural sectors.
The initiative not only aims to alleviate strain on the national grid but also marks a pivotal step in reducing reliance on conventional energy sources, aligning Iraq with global renewable energy trends.
